History / Description: In the 14th Century a monkey fountain in Basel is mentioned. This was discontinued in 1585. A "new" monkey was created in the 17th Century. He wears a hat besides a shirt and is eating grapes. The monkey was placed in 1867 on the present monkey fountain. 1916 had Jean Hym make a replica of this monkey, because the original was given to the Historical Museum. Already in 1973, the monkey had to be renovated one more time. In 1974 he was painted with mineral paints.
Special: In warmer weather, many birds here satisfy their thirst.
